The Starting Line…And a Little Magic

My Dana Farber team gave me permission to travel out to California for one last week of Leaders Journey before the start of my healing journey.  (Wait, What? I have a Dana Farber team?!)  Several of my marathons were dedicated to raising money for DFCI, I will humbly be on the receiving end of this one.

But first, what a magical week it was.

The people: beginning with my over-the-top assistant who showed up with hands, heart, and help, 24x7.  He happens to be my amazing son which was a delicious bonus. A magic wand it was.

The participants were an extraordinary cohort of brilliant, kind, curious, and big-hearted individuals. Together they formed a dazzling constellation.  Our collective energy was magnetic as they stretched themselves, played hard and transformed moment by moment.

It's always wonderful when the staff goes above and beyond to ensure that everyone has a positive experience. Their responsiveness and ability to create ideal conditions for everyone was truly commendable.  Well, it was The Ritz in Santa Barbara, so there’s that.  The consistent view of deep ocean blue, bright sunshine, and welcoming palms nourished the feeling of magic every day.

The dance now complete, it’s on to the Marathon.

While the treatments awaiting me signaling the start of a very different marathon were never completely out of mind, I found solace in doing work that I am passionate about, holding the responsibility for creating an extraordinary experience, and focusing on the things that bring me joy and fulfillment.  I was reminded that moments of living our purpose can transcend the fears lurking around the corner and help keep us motivated and positive.  I will miss that (for now), but will return more inspired than ever.

Tomorrow is Day 1 at DFCI. After lacing up my trusty shoes I will meet with Dr. Huffman, my extraordinary medical oncologist. We will review the trial I am now part of, yoink a little more blood, and make a plan for the upcoming chemo and radiation. If you know me, you know I love a good plan. Run 5 and settle in, get another 10 under my feet, slow down and assess - speed up?  Slow down?  Keep breathing, one-foot other foot.  This one defies training plans, spreadsheets and Gannt charts; how my body will respond is a mystery. We’re only in Hopkinton and I’m in it for the long haul. I will visualize the numerous signs that line the route from Hopkinson to Boston; they will inspire and energize me.

I’m home now with time to #feelallthefeels.  I’m so grateful you are here with me.
